Now in its 5th week, the parkrun takes in a 5-kilometre path around the Watermeadows. It has been welcomed by the local community with attendance figures in the hundreds for the first few events.
Since it began in 2004, parkrun has become a global phenomenon offering communities around the world a smarter way to participate in a community physical activity.
Cllr Dallyn commented: “parkrun is a wonderful initiative to get us all out enjoying beautiful environments and getting fit. We are delighted to now have one in Towcester.
“Anyone can take part, from pensioners to parents with their children, people with their dogs, wheelchair users, people pushing prams, club runners or casual runners. If you’ve never been to one come along and give it a try. My SNC Chairman’s Fun Run last October was a great success despite the rain and I wish every success with these weekly events.”
The free events take place every Saturday morning at over 1,400 locations in twenty-three countries across five continents. They are open to everyone.
Anna Harrington, Event Director of the parkrun in Towcester said: “The Watermeadows Towcester, parkrun has got off to a great start; it is a fun initiative that we hope will enhance the already great community of Towcester. We encourage people of every ability to come and join in; volunteering, walking, jogging and build to run the whole 5-kilometre route. You can be sure of a very warm welcome.
“We really appreciate the support from the Council and our funders for enabling the parkrun to take place.”
