In this, he said that his Department was writing to the county, districts and borough councils asking them to submit locally led proposals for new ways of delivering local government services in Northamptonshire.
Citing Mr Javid’s comments as a clear way forward in terms of the next steps they need to take, they have stated that the current arrangements for delivering local public services in the county need to change.
They said, “This is an opportunity to build a long-term, sustainable model for delivering services across the county. It should include a wider consideration of the delivery of public services, with the needs of residents at their very heart.”
Councillor Ian McCord, Leader of South Northamptonshire Council, said: “I am very pleased that the Secretary of State agrees with all the local districts and boroughs that a single county unitary is a bad idea. We have always argued this was too big, was focused on saving the skin of NCC and not on improving outcomes for residents.
“I am encouraged that proposals that acknowledge the successful relationship between South Northamptonshire and Cherwell will be considered and encouraged. We will now give all these matter due consideration and work up proposals that will put the residents first, create financially viable bodies, deal with the Northamptonshire County Council legacy and tackle the issue of the integration of health and care.”
