Litter enforcement

It’s an offence to drop litter in the street or in a public open space. Leaving litter on a public bench or wall and walking away is also an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Fines for dropping litter

Enforcement Officers will issue a £75 fixed penalty notice to anyone caught disposing of their litter irresponsibly. Failure to pay the £75 penalty can lead to a court imposed fine of up to £2,500.

If you have accepted and been issued with a fixed penalty notice, you will have 14 days to pay it, but it will be reduced to £50 if paid within seven days.
