Disabled Facilities Grants

Do we have to award a grant?

For us to determine whether to award a Disabled Facilities Grant, we need to consider whether

  • The work is necessary and appropriate. We have to consider what adaptations are ‘desirable’ and what are ‘essential’ to meet the assessed needs. In reaching a decision as to whether the works are ‘necessary and appropriate’ we will consult Northamptonshire County Council’s Occupational Therapy Service.
  • Whether the works are reasonable and practical. We will need to consider the age and condition of your home, including suitability of access

If we decide we are unable to approve a Disabled Facilities Grant we will advise you about any alternative options such as rehousing or loans. You may also be able to receive alternative help in the form of minor works such as hand and grab rails or specialised equipment.

Throughout the process we will ensure that the needs of the disabled person and, where applicable, their carer(s) are of paramount importance. Where the disabled person or their carer is not happy with our decision you may appeal.
