Village design guidance
We have prepared a suite of guidance issues for settlements across the district. This guidance describes the distinctive characteristics of the locality and provides design guidance to influence future development of the area.
These are an important tool for use in helping to protect the character of villages in terms of sensitive design and are used to help influence decisions on design and development. Prepared correctly, a Village Design Statement (VDS) will provide a clear statement of the character of a particular village against which planning applications may be assessed. They are not concerned with whether development should take place but with how planned development should be carried out, so that it is in harmony with its setting and contributes to the conservation and, where possible, enhancement of the local environment. Where relevant these should be read in conjunction with the Conservation Area Appraisal.
We have published a series of village design statements prepared by villages. This is is a document that describes the distinctive characteristics of the locality and provides design guidance to influence future development of the area.
