The district licensing route

Your development can become authorised under our great crested newt district licence (approved by Natural England).

You can opt into joining the scheme as part of your planning application before great crested newt surveys are carried out (ie before the presence of great crested newts is known). To begin this process, you will need to contact NatureSpace, who will then conduct an assessment to confirm whether your development is eligible for the scheme.

If you are eligible and decide to join the scheme, NatureSpace will then carry out an assessment to identify the level of compensation required. Compensation effort is focused on key high-quality habitats as part of a wider conservation plan for great crested newts.

All associated costs in joining the scheme are dependent on the development size, location (where it is sited on the risk zones map) and impacts. These are confirmed by NatureSpace once you have joined the scheme and before planning permission is granted.
