Council Tax

We would like to thank residents for continuing to pay their Council Tax as your contribution is helping us to maintain essential services. It is important that if your circumstances have not changed, that you continue to pay what you should and maintain your payment plan as detailed on your annual bill.

We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone, especially the most vulnerable members of our society. If you are struggling to pay your council tax, you should make sure you claim all of the benefits that you are entitled to. For working age applicants this is Universal Credit, which is administered by the Department for Work and Pensions and Council Tax Reduction which we administer.

If you haven’t done so already, you may also be able to extend your instalments from 10 to 12 months to lower your monthly payments.

The annual bills for council tax were prepared and printed before any Government announcements, however we are working hard to implement the initiatives where they apply.

Hardship Fund

The Government recognises that COVID-19 is likely to have an impact on households and their income and recognises that, as a result, some individuals may struggle to meet Council Tax payments. We have been awarded some Government funding to help our residents through this difficult time.

The Government expects us to use our grant allocation to reduce the council tax liability of individuals in our area.

We are busy working on our policy and with software suppliers to enable us to administer this scheme as soon as possible.

You do not need to apply for the scheme, if you qualify for the scheme, we will reduce and reissue your bill.

Struggling to pay

If you are struggling to pay your Council Tax You may be eligible for Council Tax Reduction (CTR) (sometimes called Council Tax Support) if you’re on a low income, claim certain benefits and do not have more than £16,000 in capital.

Please be aware that you will need to apply separately here for Council Tax Reduction if you have made a claim for Universal Credit.

Council Tax Scams

Residents have been warned to be on their guard against criminals and scammers exploiting the coronavirus situation. We have received reports of scams targeting people via emails, text messages, and on the doorstep, including scams relating to Council Tax refunds. We are urging residents not to click on links or respond to texts relating to this.
