The council declared an Air Quality Management Area in Towcester in September 2005 because the annual mean air quality objective for nitrogen dioxide was being exceeded. The designated area incorporates Watling Street (A5) from the Saracens Head cross-roads to Silverstone Brook adjacent to 131 Watling Street Towcester.

An Air Quality Action Plan was first produced in 2008 as part of the Council’s statutory duties required by the Air Quality Management Framework and it is acknowledged that technology and future needs of the district have evolved and therefore the AQAP has been updated to reflect the current needs to improve air quality in Towcester and across the district. Our proposed plan outlines the actions that we will take to improve air quality in South Northamptonshire between 2021 and 2026. Schedule 11 of the Environment Act 1995 requires us to consider any representations made in accordance with the consultation.

A 12 week consultation on the Draft Air Quality Action Plan 2020 starts on 9 November 2020 and finishes on 1 February 2021. We need to ensure that these actions meet the needs of those who live work, attend schools and play in the district. You can make comments through the website, in writing or by email.
