Street naming and numbering

The address of a property is increasingly becoming a very important issue. More organisations, postal and emergency services, and the general public need an efficient means of locating and referencing properties. The Council is the Street Naming and Numbering Authority for the area. It carries out these functions under the provisions of the Public Health Act 1925 sections 17 -19.

We sort out street naming. We work with the local Parish or Town Council when new streets need naming and listen to its suggestions. A Magistrates Court makes the Street Naming Order and we make sure everyone knows, including Service providers such as Royal Mail, Police, Water Supply companies etc. Developers are also told and given street numbers for individual plots.

Can I Name my House without Contacting the Council?

If your building has a number you can add a name without our permission, as long as it is not the same as another property. This new name is not part of the official address so you still need to use your number, for example:

'My House' (not part of official address)
1 My Road (official address)
Town
County
Postcode

You need permission from us if your house does not have a number but has a name as part of its official address.

How do I Name my House?

You need to put a request to us in writing with your name, the present full address of the property and the new name you want.

We will check with the Royal Mail and our own records if the name exists. If it does not, we will register it for you. If it clashes, we may ask you come up with other names. We will tell Royal Mail, the emergency and essential Services and other relevant Council services about the new name. It is up to you to let your own personal contacts know.
We may have to charge for this service.

Developing a single property/small development - How do I number properties?

If you are a developer of a single building or a small development, you need to talk to us about numbering. There is a policy in place that we can take you through.

What happens if a street needs renaming/renumbering?

Sometimes we have to change the name of a street or the numbering. The numbering may be causing confusion for example, or residents don’t like their existing street name.

Let us know if you want us to do this, but you should know that it is a long process and we will have to ballot residents.
We may also have to charge for this.
