Giant Hogweed found in Brackley

07-Aug-2008

An invasive plant known as Giant Hogweed has been found on the banks of the River Great Ouse in Brackley.

The Environmental Protection Team at South Northamptonshire Council are currently investigating a complaint regarding the presence of this plant.

The plant is easily recognisable as it grows up to 5 metres tall, has a large umbrella like flower head with white flowers and a green or brown stem with dark red/purple spots or blotches.

The Council would like to warn people that if this plant is touched, this could cause blistering of the skin, which may result in scarring. People that do touch the plant are advised to cover up the affected area and seek medical attention. For example if you touch the plant with your hands, then it is suggested that you cover them with gloves.

The Council have issued a leaflet to local residents informing them of the presence of Giant Hogweed and it’s dangers as well as notifying local doctors and medical centres.

The Council are also contacting various owners of the land affected by the plant with a view to treating or possibly removing it. Such work can only be done by specialist contractors because of the dangers involved and no one else should try to remove it.

If you have any questions or would like further advice please contact the Environmental Protection Team on 01327 322314 or email environmental.protection@southnorthants.gov.uk.
