A potentially harmful invasive plant known as Giant Hogweed, is being stamped out on land adjoining the Great Ouse in Brackley.
Giant Hogweed is easily recognisable as it grows up to five metres tall, has a large umbrella like flower head with white flowers and a green or brown stem with dark red/purple spots or blotches. The plant has a chemical in its sap that makes the skin sensitive to ultra violet light resulting in serious blistering on the skin.
Brushing against a Giant Hogweed stem or leaf stalks can cause the sap to be released, making it unwise for anyone without protective clothing to go near one. People who touch the plant are advised to wash the affected areas, keep them out of direct sunlight, and seek medical attention.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste Mangaement Councillor Mike Hill, said: “As the plant can be harmful if touched, we have been working with the relevant landowners and the Environment Agency in an attempt to control the spread of this non-native invasive weed.
“It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to plant or allow Giant Hogweed to grow. The Council will therefore continue to work with the various landowners and the Environment Agency to ensure appropriate measures continue to be taken to eradicate the plant."
For advice about Giant Hogweed and how it is treated, please contact the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506
