A Council Tax scam has been uncovered, potentially affecting people across South Northamptonshire. Bogus callers are posing as council staff asking residents for banking details by people who claim they have paid too much or too little council tax.
During the scam, people are contacted over the telephone or on their doorstep and asked for bank details so a council tax refund can be made or to avoid a fine for late payment. Residents should report any suspicious calls or emails to the Council or Police immediately.
South Northamptonshire Council is warning local people to be vigilant, especially in the run-up to Christmas, and keep a close eye on vulnerable older family members or neighbours.
Councillor Stephen Clarke, Chairman of SNC’s Audit Committee said:
“These scams can be stopped simply by being vigilant. Keep your bank and credit card details safe and never give out your PIN number. If you are entitled to a council tax refund, the council will confirm this in writing. If you are unsure if a caller is genuine, ask them for their name, job title and extension number and call them back through the council switchboard on 01327 322322.”
