Manage your rubbish - at home

Slim Your Bin!

Follow these easy tips to help reduce the amount of waste you produce and maybe cut your shopping bills!

  1. Reduce the amount of junk mail delivered to your home by up to 95%, by writing to the Mailing Preference Service at: Freepost 22, London, W1E 7EZ, or registering on line at www.mpsonline.org.
  2. Donate unwanted items to charity shops. They accept toys, books, crockery, bed linen and bric-a-brac in good condition. Old furniture can also be put to good use by many local charities.
  3. Cut down free newspapers, leaflets etc, which you don't read by putting a notice on your front door stating that you do not wish to receive free newspapers, leaflets or catalogues.
  4. Use glass jars or takeaway tubs for storing leftovers or jam making.
  5. Avoid using paper or 'throw-away' crockery, cutlery and cups for picnics and parties. Use washable plastic plates and cups instead, if china is not practical.
