Drains and sewers

Several different groups are responsible for looking after different parts of the drains and sewers system.

If you own your own home, you are responsible for the drainange under your house and up to the point where it meets the public sewer. This means that if there is a blockage in this part of the drain, it is up to you to get it cleared.

If you don't take proper action to clear it, and it becomes a problem, we have legal powers to make sure the drain is cleared and and we'll charge you for the cost of carrying out the work.

The storm drains and road drainage are the responsibility of  Northamptonshire County Council's Highways department. To report any problems contact Street doctor on:

The local water authority is responsible for for the main sewers which are usually under the road.
