Dog mess – deal with it/report it

Letting your dog foul the pavements and parks is not very nice for other people that use them – and at worst can cause blindness from an infection called ‘Toxocariosis’.

There is poop scoop law and you are breaking it if you do not clean up your dog’s mess from areas such as roads, footpaths, school playing fields, sports fields and parks.

You can be fined up to £1,000 under the law or at least get a fixed penalty ticket and a £75 fine.

If you need help and advice contact the Environmental Protection Team on:
Telephone: 01327 322314
Email: environmental.protection@southnorthants.gov.uk

If you want to report a problem with dog mess using an interactive reporting system, go to Street Doctor. Alternatively contact us on 01327 322322.

If you are dog owner, here’s what you can do to help:

  • Train the dog to go in the garden, if you have one. You can then bury the mess or clean it up and bin it.
  • If you walk your dog always carry the means to clear up after them. A simple plastic bag will do the trick or buy a poop scoop from a local pet shop
  • You can also buy biodegradable plastic "Doggy Bags" from the our council offices at Springfields in Towcester or from the Brackley Tourist Information Centre.
  • Remember to take a bag or poop-scoop with you, just in the way you would with your dog’s lead.
  • Every time your dog fouls bag it and bin it.
  • Take the poop scoop home and dispose of it there or use a bin if available. Remember rain does not wash the problem away.
  • Never let your dog out alone to "go to the loo".

We have a couple of useful booklets for you, just call us and we can get them to you by post or email.
