The district of South Northamptonshire was formed in 1974 by bringing together Brackley Borough, the Brackley and Towcester Rural Districts and part of the Northampton Rural District.
Even today it is still mainly rural in character with only two main towns, the historic market towns at Brackley (population 13,500) and Towcester (9,200).
The estimated population in 2006 was 88,800 with 34,800 households.
We expect this figure to grow, and by 2012 the population is expected to be 93,100 (see population projection table next).
| Age | 2006 | 2012 |
|---|---|---|
| 0-15 | 17,000 | 17,800 |
| 16-64 | 59,600 | 59,800 |
| 65+ | 12,200 | 15,500 |
| Total | 88,000 | 93,100 |
This increase does not allow for any expansion caused by the Milton Keynes and South Midlands Development.
The population is spread over a wide area of 63,156 hectares and is the fastest growing in the county with an increase of 11.6% between 2001 and 2006.
London and Birmingham are just over an hour's travel away by road and rail, while trunk roads link the district with other major towns in the region, such as Northampton, Oxford, Leicester, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Peterborough.
