Work to ensure the character and quality of Towcester town centre and its back streets are not lost when development takes place, was highly commended during the national Planning Awards this week.

During an awards ceremony at Savoy Place in London on Wednesday, 21 June members of the South Northamptonshire Council planning policy team were recognised for their work on the Land West of Watling Street Planning Brief.

SNC leader, Cllr Ian McCord said: “Councils, town planners and architects from across the country look to these awards as yard stick for their success.

“To be shortlisted out of the hundreds of projects that entered is an achievement in itself, to be highly commended shows that the council has a vision for a healthy and enjoyable future for an important part of Towcester town centre.”

Building on the Towcester Masterplan, the West of Watling Street Planning Brief provides strong guidelines for potential investors on various sites, should they become available for development in the future, and will assist the council in determining planning applications that secure high-quality development in the town centre.

The development control team had also been shortlisted in the award for promoting economic growth for their work with MEPC, Aylesbury Vale District Council and Terrance O’Rourke on the Silverstone Park development.
