The Football Association (FA) has awarded £1,000 to South Northants Council (SNC) to help double the number of female players by 2020.

In the build-up to this summer's UEFA Women's European Championships in the Netherlands, SNC has launched a free, weekly training session aimed at girls aged five to 11.

Sharon Bolton, SNC leisure facilities and projects manager said: "By the age of 11, 95 per cent of boys have tried football but only three per cent of girls.

"There's a huge gap there, but if we can get girls active in their formative years, hopefully it will stay with them through their teens and into adulthood."

Entitled the Wildcats, the sessions take place on the all-weather pitch at Towcester Centre for Leisure every Wednesday between 3:45pm and 4:45pm.

SNC was chosen by the FA to host Wildcats sessions as there is already a successful training session for girls aged 11 to 15 which takes place every Wednesday between 4:45pm and 5.45pm.
