A guide to keeping South Northamptonshire special

A document which aims to protect the essence of South Northamptonshire will be open for public consultation from this Monday, 10 April.

South Northamptonshire Council's (SNC) Design Guide supplementary planning document will affect all new development requiring planning permission in the district, from large commercial development to back garden improvements.

The Design Guide retains the best of the existing 20-year-old guidance, and incorporates additional information to give homeowners and developers a single, all-encompassing document.

A four week public consultation on the Design Guide opens on Monday, 10 April.

Andy Preston, SNC's head of development management said: "Every year South Northants sits in the top 20 places to live in the UK. This document aims to preserve the character, buildings and open spaces that contribute to that success.

"Much of the existing guidance is about 20 years old, is in various formats and is not especially user friendly.

"The new document will be a comprehensive guide covering an extensive list of design aspects for a wide variety of developments.

"I would urge anyone who cares about the look and feel of South Northants to take part in this consultation."

The Design Guide begins by discussing existing local and national planning policy and goes on to give a detailed analysis of the character of the district's buildings and landscapes.

The main body of the Design Guide is broken down into five parts: residential, open space, commercial development, agricultural and rural development, and schools and community developments.

The public consultation on the Design Guide ends on Monday, 8 May and comments should be submitted by no later than 5pm.

Once consultation responses are reviewed, any necessary or beneficial changes will then be made before the final version of the document is presented to the SNC Planning Policy and Regeneration Strategy Committee for adoption.

You can read the The Design Guide supplementary planning document (SPD) online and hardcopies can be viewed at The Forum in Towcester, Brackley and Towcester Town Halls, and Towcester, Roade, Middleton Cheney and Deanshanger libraries.

Comments can be made via the councilís online consultation page from Monday morning or via email.
