Staying Fit and Healthy

We should all be more active these days. People who are physically active reduce their risk of developing major chronic diseases - such as coronary heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes - by up to 50%, and the risk of premature death by 20-30%. Being active can help all of us to lead healthier and even happier lives, irrespective of age. (From: 'Be active, be healthy' strategy 2009 DOH)

The Chief Medical Officer says adults should have at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week. But 45-60 minutes of moderate physical activity a day is what most people need to prevent obesity. Children and young people need a total of at least 60 minutes of moderate physical exercise each day. At least twice a week this should include activities to improve bone health, muscle strength and flexibility.

You don't have to just play sport - activities like cycling, gardening and walking can all go towards your 30 minutes of physical activity each day.

We support a range of activities that can help you move more - health walks, Nordic walking and jogging. Click on the links below for more information on each one. We also support ACE - Active Cycling 4 Everyone.
