Bulky waste, recycling and composting

Each household in South Northamptonshire produces about one tonne of rubbish every year.

We recycle nearly half of that rubbish, the rest is dumped in landfill sites where it causes pollution and can take hundreds of years to rot down. Over 60% of all household rubbish can be recycled. This cuts pollution and energy use - and the need for more landfill sites.

How to Manage Your Rubbish

Click here for tips on how to reduce the amount of rubbish in your bin(.pdf).

Recycle your rubbish at one of the 29 Neighbourhood Recycling Centres in the district. Most accept glass, paper and cans for recycling. To find your nearest site check the Recycling centres in the district.

The Door to Door Recycling Scheme now covers the whole district, apart from some flats. You have boxes for glass and paper (green box), cans, plastic bottles, foil and aerosols (black box).

The Twin Bin Scheme gives you a green, wheeled bin for compostable garden waste and cardboard and a black bin for other household waste.

Villagers in Cosgrove can use the Carts and Crafts Horse-drawn recycling service which operates every other Wednesday collecting glass, paper, cans and plastic bottles.

Compost your kitchen peelings and garden waste at home in a discounted home composter. Go to Composting - the better way – for more information and how to order.

Getting rid of your bulky waste

We can collect items of free standing furniture and domestic white goods from households for a charge of £25 per collection. You can have up to 6 items of waste collected on each collection.

To book a bulky waste collection get a form by calling 01327 322 344 or download the Bulky Waste Request form (.pdf)

All items collected apart from fridges and freezers are thrown in a landfill site. To avoid this why not :

Composting – the better way

There are loads of reasons why you should think about getting into composting! Homemade compost improves the quality of your garden soil, helping it to retain moisture and support healthy plant growth. Composting at home is an ideal way to recycle your garden and kitchen waste, cutting the amount of waste collected by the Council.

Up to a third of what is in your bin is compostable.

Home-made compost can be used instead of shop-bought peat-based compost.

For more information and to buy a composter go to FAQs about composting.
