Towcester Market Square air quality scheme

Air quality in Towcester town centre remains above the national air quality objective for nitrogen dioxide.

An air quality management area was declared in Towcester in 2005 due to high levels of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant associated with emissions from vehicles. Detailed modelling work undertaken in 2008 showed that the disruption to traffic flows caused by vehicles manoeuvring in and out of the Market Square parking area, and illegal and inconsiderate parking in the town centre, had a significant impact on air quality.

Some changes have been made to the car parking area in Market Square with the aim of causing less disruption to the flow of traffic on the A5. An A5/A43 relief road is included in the Town's expansion plans, but the delivery date for this not known at present.
