Help for pensioners and people on benefits

a) Winter fuel allowance
The winter fuel allowance is a tax free, non means tested payment intended to help older people keep warm during the winter. For the winter of 2015/16 it is set at up to £200 for those over 60, and up to £300 for those over 80.

b) Cold weather payments
Cold weather payments are made to people in receipt of certain benefits to help with additional heating costs during cold weather. Payments are made for each seven day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March. A network of weather stations across the country gathers temperature information. Payments are made when the local temperature is either:

c) Warm home discount
For winter 2015 to 2016, you could get £140 off your electricity bill through the warm home discount scheme

d) Green Deal

e) Local Authority Grants
Households living in poorly insulated properties or properties without adequate heating may be eligible for a grant from the council. To be eligible for a grant the householder must be an owner occupier and be in receipt of a benefit. The grants are discretionary and funding is limited.
