South Northamptonshire Council's Building Control team seeks to ensure that buildings are properly designed and constructed so as to ensure health, safety welfare and convenience of people using them, and for the conservation of fuel and power (limiting carbon emissions).
Principal aspects covered by Building Regulations

Structural stability - Will the building safely carry anticipated loading?

Fire precautions - Controlling fire resistance of structural elements, limiting fire spread, means of escape provisions and access provision for the Fire Service.

The prevention of dampness and condensation in buildings.

Site preparation and resistance to contaminants.

Sound resistance of walls and floors.

Ventilation of buildings.

Hygiene, sanitary appliances and drainage.

Heating appliances including the safe discharge of flue gasses and siting of fuel storage tanks/cylinders.

Stairways and ramps.

Energy conservation and limiting carbon emissions.

Access to and use of buildings.

Electrical safety.

The need for safety glazing in certain locations.
