Community safety news

Young citizens

Daventry District and South Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership have been successfully addressing issues of youth related anti-social behaviour, achieving a 42% reduction in reported incidents over the past four years.

We decided to change focus from reactive work and get upstream of problems and work with children at an early stage to encourage good citizenship.

The Community Safety Partnership covers 500 square miles, with nearly one hundred primary and secondary schools. Rather than officers from one or more agencies going into individual schools it was more efficient to get the different schools to come to us.

There was some reluctance from schools in taking a year group off site for a whole day but having an iconic venue within the District gave a great opportunity to make this event attractive: Silverstone Circuit were happy to be involved and gave the use of their premises free of charge. This input and that of DHL on road safety and providing goodie bags for pupils meant that the project cost nothing.

After the first project at Silverstone Circuit the Young Citizens Scheme has now been run in South Northamptonshire and Daventry on several occasions and over 700 year six pupils have now attended.

The project ran over two days in October 2015 and the following topics give a flavour of the work partners deliver:

The following quotes from teachers illustrate the success better than we could:
