The next elections for the Northamptonshire County Council will be held together with the European Parliamentary election on 4 June 2009.

A General Election could be called at any time and will be held using the new Parliamentary constituency boundaries. Most of South Northamptonshire will have its own MP, but some parishes will come under the revised Daventry constituency.

If you want to vote, get on the register.
You can’t vote unless you are on the Register of Electors. You can get on to the register with our help throughout the year.
If you don’t know whether you are on it or not, then you can check the full list at the Customer Service Centre in our offices in Towcester. Or you can call Electoral Services on 01327 322128.
If you are not on the published register, all you need to do is to contact us on the number above to request a form. You will need to sign your own form - someone else cannot do it for you.
When you send us your completed, signed form we will add you to our list of new applications and we will write to tell you that we have received your application. Any elector can then object to your name being added to the register. If this happens we will write to you again.
If your application is OK, your details will be published on the next monthly list (between two and six weeks after we receive your completed form). You can ask us not to put your address details on this list in certain circumstances please contact the office.
Moving house or living abroad
If you move house you will need to contact the Electoral Registration Office, at the Council where you will pay your council tax, and ask for a registration form. If you are going to live abroad and are a British citizen you will still be entitled to vote at UK Parliamentary elections. To do so you will need to apply to register as an overseas elector with the Council for the address where you were last registered in the UK within the last 15 years.
If you are going on the register here because you have moved house, we will ask the Electoral Registration Officer for your old address to take you off that register. People who live at two homes (including students) are allowed to register at both. If you do not want to be removed from your other address, please explain why on your form.
There are special rules about names being added to the voters’ list during an election period. You may not be able to vote at that election.
How to vote
When an election is held you can vote in person at the polling station near your registered address. If this is not easy, you may apply to vote by post. Or you can ask a relative or friend to cast your vote for you - this is called voting by proxy.
If you wish to apply to vote by post, either for one particular election or permanently, you can do so by filling in a form. You do not have to tell us why you need a postal vote.
If you wish to apply to vote by proxy (when someone you choose votes on your behalf) you can do so by filling in a form. You will have to tell us why you need a proxy vote and you may need the form to be counter-signed. A full explanation is given on the form. Your proxy may apply to cast your vote by post.
