Kicking off a summer of fun, children in South Northamptonshire villages have been getting artistic and creative at a series of arts workshops during the first weeks of the school holidays as South Northamptonshire Council’s programme of SPLAT gets underway.

Making felt pictures from sheep’s wool, getting dramatic in 'Time Traveller' workshops with the Looking Glass Theatre, or dancing and singing to songs from their favourite musicals, all these and more are on through SPLAT.

The SPLAT programme also offers eight to sixteen year olds the chance to join local artist Sarah Bament during August for her popular workshops where they can learn artistic techniques such as collage, pastels, ink and drawing, to create Action Characters such as Buzz Lightyear and Spiderman. Workshops will take place at Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum on 12 August and at Blakesley on 13 August (Art Around the World).

Other activities taking place include Bead Bracelet Making at Bead Scene on 19 and 26 August, an Aladdins Cave of colourful beads and jewellery items at Potterspury, and ‘Fly the Flag’ workshops on 20 August in Eydon and Chipping Warden.

Young people interested in computer animation can have a go during free drop-in sessions on the Youth Bus when it visits Middleton Cheney on 17 August and Pattishall on 18 August.  Additionally, courses in animation, podcasting and Music Zone 'Jammin' will continue at the Animation Station at Chenderit School.

Councillor Rosie Herring, Cabinet member for Community Wellbeing, said: “These arts workshops give young people marvellous opportunities to be creative, guided by professional artists and performers. Feedback from those who take part and their parents is always very positive. This year, we are pleased to work with new partners Animation Station and the Youth Bus to provide the animation workshops, which are proving a big hit, as well as previously popular arts activities.”
