Welcome to South Northamptonshire!
South Northamptonshire offers idyllic countryside and a rich heritage for residents, visitors and tourists to explore and enjoy.
The district has some of the most beautiful countryside in Northamptonshire, with a picturesque charm often compared to that of the Cotswolds. Its landscapes are gentle, with winding rivers and stretches of both the Oxford and Grand Union Canals. Modest hills, patches of woodland and forest, and fields that have been farmed for generations cradle delightful villages of mellow stone and the historic market towns of Towcester and Brackley.
There are numerous places to enjoy visiting, from the excitement of events at Silverstone Circuit, the home of British motor racing, to the historic interest of Sulgrave Manor, a wonderful Tudor manor house which was home to George Washington's ancestors. Salcey Forest, once a royal hunting forest, offers a spectacular Tree Top Walk and the canal village of Stoke Bruerne, set on the Grand Union Canal just south of the Blisworth Tunnel, has waterside inns and a fascinating Canal Museum in the most appealing of settings. Towcester and Brackley are both rewarding towns to visit, with well-preserved Georgian and Victorian architecture and specialist shops. Both towns were important resting points for coaches on the London to Holyhead road and several old coaching inns remain in testimony to this, the most famous of which is The Saracen's Head in Towcester, immortalised by Dickens in "The Pickwick Papers".
