Chairman
The Chairman of the Council for 2011/12 is Councillor Sally Townsend
The Chairman presides over meetings of the full Council, ensuring that the Council acts in the best interests of all residents and businesses in the District. Elected by the whole of the Council at its Annual Meeting in May, the Chairman serves for one municipal year’.
The Chairman acts as civic figurehead and ambassador for the Council and the District of South Northamptonshire.
Councillor Sally Townsend was born and grew up in Sheffield until leaving in 1979. Sally, with her husband Peter, moved to Bedford for 5 years and then moved to Boston Spa just outside Wetherby, until moving to Northamptonshire in 1987. They moved into Milton Malsor village in South Northamptonshire in 1993, and Sally became a District Councillor for the Courteenhall Ward in 1999. Sally and Peter have two daughters, Samantha and Nicola, who are both married; one couple living in Towcester and the other couple living in Chester.
Sally worked for Lloyds Bank on leaving school and married Peter in 1977 while still in Sheffield. She worked for Standard Chartered Bank in the City of London until leaving Bedford and retrained as an Architectural Technologist at Northampton University before standing for election in 1999. Sally runs her own business now and enjoys keeping fit and watching rugby, as a season ticket holder for the Saints and the occasional England game; she is a person who likes new challenges and has just enrolled to take a PADI diving course.
Sally has selected two charities for her year in office. Diabetes UK based in Nottingham, with a branch in the Towcester Area, and the Marie Curie Cancer Care in Northampton. Both raise money to support young and old sufferers and their families in times of difficulty and undertake research to find a cure.
As well as the regular roles as Chairman and representing the District at events, Sally aims to promote sports and leisure activities in the district. She feels that this is appropriate in her term of office during the year of the Olympics, and points out that South Northamptonshire has much to offer for residents and visitors to enjoy themselves in a sport or a village activity.
