Homelessness

We provide housing advice to everyone in the district and have a legal duty to help certain households who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. The kind of help we give will depend on your situation. If we don't have a duty to house you immediately, you can still go on the housing register (the waiting list for social housing).

Click here to find out how to get on the housing register.

If you are homeless or about to become homeless within the next 28 days, the Housing Options Team may be able to help you find the best solution to your situation.

Contact us for help and advice: Telephone: 01327 322396  Email: housing@southnorthants.gov.uk

If you are homeless or threatened with homelessness within 28 days we will need to find out whether we have a legal duty to house you. Our enquiries should not take more than 33 days. The ways in which we look into your case are set out by law. Please read our leaflet on homelessness (pdf), which sets out our duties and responsibilities, and what you will need to do.

You can also contact independent charities like Shelter or Crisis for advice and help.

  • Visit Shelter's website or call their free housing advice helpline on 0808 800 4444.
  • Visit the Crisis website or call 0870 011 3335.

Mortgage Rescue Scheme

Homeowners experiencing difficulty in meeting their mortgage payments may be eligible for help through the Government’s Mortgage Rescue Scheme (MRS). The scheme is for vulnerable households at risk of homelessness as a result of repossession. There are eligibility criteria attached to the scheme. Please click here for details.

Homelessness Strategy 2008 -2013

The current homelessness strategy document for South Northamptonshire Council is Homelessness Strategy 2008-2013.

The strategy describes how the Council will respond to and prevent homelessness in the future and sets out priorities the Council aim to deliver over the next five years.

The 5 homelessness priorities aim to:

  • Improve housing options for those in housing need
  • Improve multi-agency working to prevent homelessness
  • Maximise and improve the support available to vulnerable groups
  • Prevent homelessness wherever possible through effective intervention, mediation & advice.
  • Equal access for all to accommodation, prevention and support services

For further information about the homelessness strategy please contact the Strategic Housing Team on 01327 322067 or email HousingStrategy@southnorthants.gov.uk

New directory to help tackle homelessness

Homeless Directory 2008

A comprehensive directory of resources to help people who are homeless has been launched jointly by Daventry District Council and South Northamptonshire Council.

The Homeless Directory 2008 pulls together contacts for hundreds of relevant agencies, including advice bureaux, local authorities, housing associations, care charities and short-term accommodation options,  all of whom are able to help those who find themselves without somewhere to live.
