Air Quality
Concern over the effects of modern day pollutants from road transport and industrial sources led to the introduction of the EU directive on Air Quality. It is considered that clean air is an essential ingredient of a good quality of life and that everyone has the right to expect that the air that they breathe will not harm them.
Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) in the UK has emerged from the requirement to implement the EC Ambient Air Quality Framework Directive. Over the last fourteen years a process of reviewing and assessing local air quality has been developed, to identify locations where members of the public are most at risk from airborne pollutants.
Where an air quality problem has been found to exist, the Local Authority must declare an Air Quality Management Area.
Once an Air Quality Management Area has been declared the Local Authority must draw up an Action Plan setting out how the objectives will be achieved in this area.
